Elevating Luxury: The Curved Glulam Architecture of Cocoon Retreat in Malibu

High atop the iconic ridge of Mulholland Drive in Malibu, California, a new standard for secluded architectural excellence has emerged. The Cocoon Retreat is a masterclass in modern mountain design, blending the rugged beauty of the Los Angeles mountains with the refined elegance of custom mass timber construction. This private getaway serves as a premier example of how curved glulam beams can be utilized to create organic forms that harmonize with breathtaking natural landscapes.

The Vision: A Secluded Mountaintop Sanctuary

The primary objective for the Cocoon Retreat was to realize a vision of total immersion. The client sought to build a structure that did not just overlook the mountains but felt like a natural extension of them. Central to this design was the requirement for an expansive roofline that could facilitate unobstructed, panoramic views.

The choice of Glulam (Glued Laminated Timber) was a deliberate aesthetic and structural decision. Beyond its incredible strength to weight ratio, the material was selected for two specific reasons:

  • Geometric Versatility: The ability to be shaped into continuous, fluid curves that mimic the rolling horizon of the Malibu hills.
  • Material Warmth: The organic texture of Douglas Fir provides a welcoming ambiance that only intensifies when stained and sealed.

Technical Mastery: Uniformly Cambered Douglas Fir

Bringing a “cocoon” shape to life requires precision engineering and an understanding of timber behavior. Our contribution to this Malibu landmark centered on the fabrication of both long and short span continuous curved glulam beams.

Structural Precision

To satisfy the exacting requirements of the customer, the timber was processed with specific architectural details:

  • Uniform Camber: Each beam was engineered with a consistent curve to ensure structural stability across the varying spans of the retreat.
  • Clean Geometry: Per the client request, the beams were squared in both width and depth with crisp, square edges, providing a modern industrial contrast to the organic curves.
  • Ready for Finish: Every beam arrived pre surfaced and planed smooth. This high level of preparation allowed the onsite installers to move directly to the staining and sealing process, preserving the pristine quality of the Douglas Fir.

Seamless Project Execution: From Shop Drawings to Mulholland Drive

The logistics of a mountaintop build on Mulholland Drive require flawless coordination. Glu-Lam Sales provided the essential technical support needed to bridge the gap between the architectural concept and the final onsite installation.

  1. Comprehensive Estimation: We provided detailed cost analysis and material takeoffs to ensure the project remained on track from the earliest planning stages.
  2. Exacting Shop Drawings: We generated detailed profile shop drawings illustrating every curve profile. These technical blueprints were vital for the customer to visualize the interlocking system before fabrication began.
  3. On Time Delivery Coordination: Navigating the winding roads of Malibu with long span timber is a feat of logistics. We ensured that every member arrived exactly when needed, ready for the customer’s team to crane into place.
