From Industrial Roots to Wildflower Meadows: The Duck Farm Park Glulam Awnings

The transformation of Valley Blvd in La Puente, California, marks a significant milestone in Southern California’s commitment to urban “rewilding.” What once served as a commercial duck farm has been meticulously revitalized into a sprawling public park, blending ecological restoration with functional architectural beauty. Central to this transformation is a series of decorative curved glulam awnings that provide shade, structure, and a visual link between the park’s industrial past and its flourishing natural future.

The Vision: Rewilding La Puente through Architectural Design

The primary goal for the Duck Farm Park project was to breathe new life into formerly commercial land. The plan focused on creating a multifaceted community space featuring wildflower meadows, scenic river overlooks, and winding walking paths.

To anchor these diverse zones, the design required structural elements that felt organic rather than industrial. The choice of Decorative Arched Glued Laminated beams allowed for the creation of picnic areas and shaded overlooks that mirror the rolling topography of the San Gabriel Valley. By supporting these curved wood members with sleek steel columns, the project achieves a modern, “mountain contemporary” aesthetic that stands up to the rigors of public use.

Engineering the Curve: Double Cambered Glulam Design

Architectural beauty in public parks requires a high degree of technical precision, especially when dealing with non linear geometries. The Duck Farm project features eleven architectural grade glulam beams, but the complexity lies in their variation.

Achieving Geometric Variety

Rather than using a uniform mold, our team facilitated the production of four separate double cambered designs. This variety ensures that each awning assembly feels unique to its specific location within the park, whether it is sheltering a picnic table or framing a view of the river.

Double cambering adds a layer of structural complexity, as the beam must maintain its load bearing integrity while curving along multiple planes. This design choice provides superior water runoff and a more dynamic visual profile compared to standard single curve beams.

Built for the Elements: Wood Specifications and Longevity

Because these structures are located in an open public park, durability was just as important as design.

  • Species: Douglas Fir was selected for its high strength to weight ratio and its natural ability to take stains and sealants effectively.
  • Treatment: All beams were pressure treated prior to delivery. This process is essential for outdoor public structures, providing deep seated resistance against rot, decay, and local pests.
  • Finish: The beams are S4S (Sanded Four Sides) to ensure a smooth, architectural grade touch. They are finished with a rich stain that highlights the natural grain while providing an extra layer of UV protection.
  • Structural Layup: A single span layup was utilized to ensure maximum stability across the open spans of the picnic and overlook areas.

Technical Support and Project Coordination

A rewilding project of this scale requires seamless communication between designers, detailers, and site managers. Glu-Lam Sales provided the critical infrastructure to move this project from a conceptual park map to a physical reality.

  1. Exacting Estimation: We provided detailed material analysis to ensure the project met the budgetary requirements of the public park redevelopment.
  2. Specialized Shop Drawings: Our team produced detailed profile and connection drawings. These were vital for ensuring the double cambered beams aligned perfectly with the pre installed steel columns.
  3. Delivery Coordination: With eleven large scale members and varied designs, logistical timing was paramount. We managed the delivery to the Valley Blvd site to ensure the installation crew could work efficiently without storing sensitive timber onsite for longer than necessary.
