Precision Timber Engineering: Alaskan Yellow Cedar Awnings at Victoria Gardens
In the bustling commercial and public landscape of Rancho Cucamonga, California, the Victoria Gardens Awnings project stands as a benchmark for technical wood fabrication. This installation demonstrates how high performance species like Alaskan Yellow Cedar can be transformed through complex machining to create structural systems that are as durable as they are visually striking. By utilizing advanced glulam technology, the project provides functional shade while serving as an architectural statement for the local community.
The Objective: Seamless Onsite Installation through Prefabrication
The primary goal for the Victoria Gardens project was to deliver six upright glulam awning assemblies that arrived onsite ready for immediate installation. To minimize field labor and potential errors, the design called for a cantilevered system where the columns and top chords were pre machined to accept intricate steel connections.
This “plug and play” approach required the absolute synchronization of timber fabrication and third party steel manufacturing. Each assembly is comprised of a single vertical glulam column and a cantilevered glulam beam, joined by a series of inset steel plates that provide the necessary structural rigidity for the public space.
Technical Achievements: Knife Cuts, Dapping, and Plunge Cuts
The complexity of these awnings lies in the “hidden” engineering within the wood. To maintain a clean aesthetic while supporting significant cantilevered loads, we executed a series of high precision machining tasks:
Cantilevered Beam Fabrication
Each horizontal beam underwent a full depth plunge cut and a specialized angled dap. These recesses allow the steel hardware to sit flush within the timber. Furthermore, precision through drilling was performed to accommodate countersunk bolts, ensuring that the hardware remains unobtrusive and protected from the elements.
Column Engineering and Knife Cuts
The vertical columns required even more intensive machining to manage the load transfer:
- Three Foot Through Knife Cut: Located at the primary connection point, this deep slot accommodates twenty through drilled and countersunk bolts.
- Two Foot Plunge Cut: Positioned at the opposite end, this cut houses an additional five bolts, providing a secondary point of structural reinforcement.
Wood Specifications: Alaskan Yellow Cedar and Specialized Layups
Material selection for the Victoria Gardens awnings was driven by the need for natural rot resistance and specific structural performance. Alaskan Yellow Cedar was specified for its legendary durability in outdoor public environments.
Optimized Layups for Structural Load
Not all glulams are created equal. For this project, we utilized two distinct fiber orientations:
- Vertical Strength Layup (Columns): The columns were fabricated with a layup optimized for compression and vertical stability.
- Balanced Layup (Cantilevered Beams): Because the upper chords extend outward, they were fabricated with a balanced layup to handle the tension and compression forces unique to cantilevered structures.
The columns were finished S4S (Surfaced 4 Sides), while the top chords were finished S3S (Surfaced 3 Sides), ensuring a premium tactile experience for pedestrians and a clean look for the overall assembly.
Glu-Lam Sales Services: Bridging Design and Reality
Executing a project with this many moving parts requires a dedicated technical partner. Our services for Victoria Gardens included:
- Technical Estimation: Aligning the project’s complex machining requirements with the public sector budget.
- Detailed Profile Shop Drawings: We provided the “digital DNA” for the project, illustrating every plunge cut, knife cut, and drill hole to ensure 100% compatibility with the prefabricated steel.
- Delivery Coordination: Managing the logistics to ensure all six assemblies arrived in Rancho Cucamonga in perfect sequence for the installation crew.
