The centerpiece of this revitalization? A series of massive, expertly fabricated interlocking glulam roof trusses that redefine the building’s interior volume.

The Goal: A Light-Filled Public Hub

The architectural intent for the La Habra Civic Center was to transition from a traditional “closed-off” government building to an open, inviting environment. By custom-fabricating expansive glulam trusses, the design team was able to:

  • Achieve a Soaring Open Roof: Eliminating the need for dense internal supports.
  • Prioritize Natural Light: Creating a canopy that allows sunlight to flood the public corridors and offices.
  • Bridge the Gap Between History and Modernity: Utilizing wood to provide a timeless, organic feel within a contemporary civic setting.

Engineering Precision: From 3D Modeling to the Crane

The structural demands of this project required more than just standard lumber; they required a masterclass in timber engineering.

Achieving the “Exacting Fit”

With 11 custom glulam trusses spanning between 24 and 45 feet, there was zero margin for error. To ensure a perfect installation, our team generated 25 pages of detailed shop drawings. These weren’t just simple sketches; they included comprehensive 2D and 3D views of every truss, connection point, and steel plate.

The success of this project relied on extensive communication regarding onsite conditions. Precise measurements were taken to ensure that when the trusses arrived, they integrated seamlessly with the existing masonry and stone elements of the La Habra site.

Ready for the Skies

To minimize onsite labor and maximize quality control, the trusses were:

  1. Fully Assembled: Built to specification before leaving the facility.
  2. Protected: Wrapped in high-grade water-resistant paper to ensure the Architectural Grade finish remained pristine during transit.
  3. Crane-Ready: Delivered specifically to be craned directly from the truck into their final structural positions.

The La Habra Civic Center required a balance of heavy-duty structural capacity and high-end aesthetic appeal.

  • Timber: Architectural Grade Douglas Fir Glulam, chosen for its warmth and superior span capabilities.
  • Hardware: Custom-fabricated steel connections, ranging from 1/4” to 3/4” thick, finished in a bold black to provide a striking industrial contrast to the natural wood grain.
